A sailing classic filled with great milestones…Tuesday, July 06, 2010


Cap Istanbul, the final race of the French Championship of Solo Offshore Racing is going to take place between 14 September – October 16. Ever since the first organization that took place in 2006, Cap İstanbul which has been an object of great interest by sailors and the sailing arena, is going to reach new dimensions with the organization of Olay Nautic.


NEW START CITY: TOULON
With the starting cities being Cannes in 2006, Nice in 2007 and Marseilles in 2008, the starting city of this year's Cap Istanbul is going to be the most important harbor city of France in the Mediterranean, Toulon. This is going to be the first offshore race to be hosted by this area where sailing is an extremely popular sport. The French Secretary of State for Defense and Veterans Hubert Falco and the Mayor of Hyeres Les Palmiers Jacques Politi have made an official public announcement that they are ready for every kind of collaboration with Olay Nautic for the start organization.


NEW ROUTE
Nicolas Berenger who is the last champion of Cap Istanbul, mentions his admiration for this route in every opportunity he has: "This is probably one of the best routes that could be offered to us, we get to race amongst very diverse and unique seas and scenery.”
The race starts from Toulon.  The first leg city is Sicily's Ragusa which has been included in the Treasure's of World Culture. Afterwards, the fleet will pass through the Tirane and  Ion seas and into the Aegean sea. With another first, the fleet will this time be welcomed by Athens. In the final part of the race, the fleet will enter Turkey through Didyma after a technical stage in Tenedos. They will pass the Dardanelles Strait and after going through Gallipoli, the start for the Istanbul leg will be given.  The sailors will exhibit their talents by completing 1590 sea miles of difficult routes.


NEW EXCITEMENT
Applications end on July 16th.  There are 24 official applications as of now.  The important sailors of the Figaro Class: Sebastian Josse, Erwan Tabarly, Nicolas Berenger, Eric Drouglazet, François Gabart, Nicolas Lunven, Marc Emig ve Christophe Bouvet have completed their applications.  Many successful sailors from different countries like Jonny Malbon (England) are also participating in this race. Ofcourse the unforgettable female Figaro racers: Isabelle Joschke and Jeanne Gregoire are going to be taking their place at the start. The biggest development of Cap Istanbul 2010 is the participation of a Turkish sailor for the first time. Selim Kakis who is a national team sailor, will be participating in the race with the organization of Olay Nautic and sponsorship of General Management of Youth and Sport.


A COMMUMICATION PLATFORM WITH MANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS
The Cap Istanbul 2010 organization has new developments in terms of communication as well.  The whole race is going to be followed by a special media boat with all technical equipment necessary for live broadcasting.  Members of the press on the boat will have the opportunity to produce videos, audio recordings and interviews. They will be able to send all of this fresh media content through a satellite for the viewing of millions of sea and sailing fans all over the world. The race villages in the leg cities of the race are going to be of great interest for the French, Italian and Turkish press.


NEW HORIZONS
Cumali Varer, the President of Olay Nautic, who emphasizes his sensitivity towards the environment and the sea in every opportunity, places the Cap Istanbul 2010 race into an environmental and clean sea struggle platform.   Due to this, all of the sailors are going to sign an environmental protection pact before the start of the race.  At the same time, this race carries the mission of reminding the public about the importance of the Toulon-Tekirdag ro-ro sea route that began this year. At the end of the race there is going to be a closing ceremony with a race in the Istanbul Bosphorus. In this race, 27 EU member ambassadors are going to placed in the Figaro race boats, which will be an enlightening event in a period where Turkey and EU relations is playing an important role.

Mer 9 Juin : Cap Istanbul 2010: Entries are open

Now that the Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE has concluded and competitors are counting down to the Solitaire du Figaro, the 2010 edition of the Cap Istanbul is coming up on the horizon. Following on from the recent announcement of the town of Hyères - Toulon Provence Méditerranée as the start port, today's news relates to Sicily. Ragusa, situated on the south side of the island, replaces Trapani as the host port which will welcome the fleet of solo sailors at the end of Leg 1 from the 23rd to the 26th September. There is no doubt that this new destination will deliver the warmth and flavour of great Mediterranean encounters.

Dim 6 Dec : Cap Istanbul 2010: the legend is on its way.

Firmly rooted in sailors' minds and in offshore racing calendars, the Cap Istanbul cannot be discounted as a small revolution in the sailing world. It can proudly be considered as the race unveiling new horizons. Spurred on by the agency Olay Nautic and with the passing years, the only Mediterranean event of the French Offshore Solo Racing Championship has become a reference in top sailors' career. For the fourth edition, from 14th September to 16th October, the Figaro Bénéteau fleet will sail from West to East, braiding an Ariadne's thread between the harbours of Hyères/TPM, Ragusa, Athens, Didim, Bozcaada and Istanbul, and writing a new chapter of the Mediterranean stories. There is no doubt that the Cap Istanbul Race will become one of these sea epics…
